Description

On the North side of the Great Hall is a Laithe or barn and a range of Cartsheds which house the Folk Museum. The Museum was established in 1953 and later enlarged. It was to give a glimpse of ordinary folk's lives in Yorkshire before the First World War.
The Museum has many outbuildings.
THE BARN, THRESHING ROOM, CART SHEDS, BREWHOUSE-1677/78, CLOGMAKER'S SHOP, THE SADDLER and Harness maker. THE CRISPIN INN, THE ESTATE WORKERS COTTAGE, APOTHACARY with patent remedies, THE BLACKSMITH, THE WHEELWRIGHT, THE COOPER making Barrels, and THE BASKET MAKER. All in the grounds of the Folk Museum.
This is THE LISTER CHAISE, one of the OLDEST CARRIAGES SURVIVING in the WORLD !
This light vehicle was built between 1700 and 1725 and was used by the LISTER FAMILY for many years at SHIBDEN HALL, It was presented to The Halifax Museum by JOHN LISTER before he died in 1932. The colours appear to be original and the Lister Coat of Arms are painted on each door.
I have a few more things to post that some may find interesting, well I hope so.
Thanks again for all comments.

Ah! the age of graceful transportation. A wonderful old carriage and a super shot Alan. I am enjoying you posts a lot. Diane.
Great capture of this very old carriage, it looks like they had some very large springs attached to give them a smoth ride. I wonder if you got a close up of the Coat of Arms? Looking at this it seems to be on every panel not just the doors. It would be interesting to see it. I enjoy things like this as you know. Look forward to your next treat. Bravo!!!!!

How amazing to see something like this that is 300 years old! I'm sure the maker never imagined it would still be around in the year 2007. Beautiful!
Beautiful image. I didn't think there were any of these original carriages left. Very nice.
