Description
No idea what this is. Been seeing them hanging around our 'butterfly bush' along with ... butterflies, bees, hornets, and small birds. Our first impression was that this was a hummingbird. It flies backwards, up, down, and hovers. The head is like that of a butterfly and the body, of some, is like that of a wasp (long and in two parts, etc.).
One neighbor pronounced it to be a Deathshead Moth... Nawwwwwww. But if anyone knows what it is, we'd like to know!
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.
Thank you all for your kind words on Barty. You are right; he is missed.

Great photo's very well done!
Would help to know where it was taken but it is one of the clearwing hummingbird hawkmoth species or Nessus Sphinx type moths
Yes, a sphinx moth, as Danny said. These are strange and do not frist appear to be moths due to the clear wings.
it is indeed a strange one!
Sorry guys. Photo was taken south of Baltimore, MD.
