Description
I learned only today that one of the finest Irish singers that ever lived, Tommy Makem, passed away on August 1, 2007, on the very day that I took this picture of the Clinch Valley in Virginia. My heart is heavy and my eyes are moist as I mourn his passing.
I had the great honor and distinct privilege of meeting Tommy Makem and shaking his hand a number of years ago. At our request, he was kind enough to sing his famous signature song, "Four Green Fields" especially for my husband and myself. We were sitting in the front row, and he sang directly to and for us. We were so close that we could see his knuckles turn white on his tightly fisted hands as he reached the crescendo of the song. It was as if the rest of the audience did not even exist! It was the best version of the song he ever sang, with so much conviction and emotion. It's a moment I'll remember if I live to be 120. Rest in Peace, Tommy Makem. Your music has been a joy to your fans over the years.

I thank you for the link to the music, Maria. It was wonderful to hear Tommy sing. I too listen to a lot of Irish music, it takes us to another time, another place, it takes us home.. I am glad Tommy sang especially for you and your husband. A very precious memory that can never be taken from you. Your capture is superb, I think Tommy would have liked it. May he rest in peace.
