I have only seen a red dragonfly 3 times period that I recall.they are fairly common, even though they have eluded me

this one was not cooperative and would not let me approach from the front.when I would even get close, it would start waving it's wings and then finally take off.I would wait and it would return to the same place

Very beautiful shot Richard, really amazingly beautiful.
On one or two occasions I have seen one similar to this. They were very elusive and never perched for more than a few seconds (always on the other side of the pond, lol). I see Red Saddlewings all the time but they are not this vivid although they do have a fair amount of red in their wings to make up for that. They never perch as far as I can tell. I have a number of photos showing blurry red smears against a water background to prove it, lol. This is a splendid shot. The golden amber color in the wings is especially nice and the red face is a bonus. Thanks for sharing. Lee
