Description
Planet of the Apes is a 1968 science fiction film about an astronaut (Charlton Heston) who finds himself stranded on an Earth-like planet two thousand years in the future. On this planet, non-human apes are the dominant form of life and humans are beasts. The film is based on the Planet of the Apes novel by Pierre Boulle.
The film uses the depiction of ape society to attack notions of human superiority. In particular, the apes' prejudice against humans, based on religion, can be seen as an attack both on creationism (Taylor's trial bearing some resemblance to the real-life Scopes Monkey Trial, and the apes' religious texts to the King James Version of the Bible) and on the idea of an "evolutionary ladder" (a common misconception about evolution) with humans at the top.
Planet of the Apes was followed by four sequels:
* Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
* Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
* Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
* Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
and two television series:
* Planet of the Apes (1974)
* Return to the Planet of the Apes (animated) (1975)
The movie was "reimagined" in 2001 by Tim Burton.
Marvel Comics produced full comic book adaptations of all the films, plus one original graphic novel-length sequel, Terror On The Planet Of The Apes.

No wonder the Icarus crashed, Charlton is only good with guns ! Kool scene from the movie, I really liked them all, they had some interesting concpets for that time. IMHO some more variation in the bubbling water, just a suggestion, still very kool work Luca ! ~Cheers~

Great iconic scene from the one that started it all. Very well researched. I believe you mentioned all the major productions. It can be debated that "Planet of the Apes" helped drive the now common practice of movie sequels. It didn't start it, that "honor" is better reserved for the Universal "monster" movies, but it certainly paved the way for productions like Star Wars, Alien, etc. The first can also be considered the "ultimate" Twilight Zone episode. With a screenplay partially written by TZ creator Rod Serling, it presents a narrative of an upside-down society with a twist ending used more than once on "...Zone", it was Earth all along, wiped out by nuclear war. As wee tykes, my friend Kyle and I would "play" PotA and other sci-fi media instead of the more pedestrian "Cops and Robbers" or "Cowboys and Indians". Whatever the material, Kyle wanted to be the action hero, so I wound up playing the "character" roles, in the case of "...Apes", I played Cornelius to his Taylor. I didn't mind. I found the "character" roles to be a bit more interesting. I also developed a fascination for prosthetic make-up (as can be evidenced by my avatar). Sincerely, Bill
