"I Robot" is a collection of nine English language science fiction short stories by Isaac Asimov, first published by Gnome Press in 1950 in an edition of 5,000 copies. During the decades "I Robot" was printed in millions of copyes in almost all the languages. The stories originally appeared in the American magazines Super Science Stories and Astounding Science Fiction between 1940 and 1950. Though the stories work well enough individually, they share a theme of the interaction of humans, robots and morality, and when combined they tell a larger story of Asimov's fictional history of robotics. The book also contains the short story in which Asimov's famous Three Laws of Robotics first appear. Introduced in his 1942 short story "Runaround", the Laws state the following: * A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. * A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. * A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
