Don't ask me,... I have never seen one like it before! If you know what it is, please let me know. Being the SciFi nut that I am, I found the shape fascinating, could be an alien spacechip. Yup - common name is columbine, genus name is aquilegia. Mine aren't in bloom yet, but alllllllmost. Beautiful shot!

Yes, columbine. These are the state flower of Colorado. Yours is pinkish. The official flower of Colorado is the blue variety. Since yours is not the official color, etc., you can take domesticated ones -- they come in a wide variety of colors --, and the little "knob" ends of the petals that extend backwards can be bitten off and the nectar sucked out. Yum. We had gardens full of yellow and pink and other colors, so it didn't hurt to sacrifice a few blossoms here and there to get at the good nectar. If all you see is a few blooms, obviously I wouldn't do the nectar thing. :) Great shot, BTW. Thanks for sharing it. An old Colorado boy like me always likes to see pictures of columbine.
