Description
I posted this in the photography forum for some technical help and constructive critical comments. I came real close to what I wanted to achieve with the eye being real crisp but I think the nose was a little to out of focus. Any tips would be most welcome. Thanks to all those that take the time to view and offer your advice.
Lens used was my new 14-54mm

I love it the way it is mate! With the nose blurred that bit it puts center to his eye, makes ya just stare at him in the eye :) Well done with it mate!
Woah I wish I could have eyes like that! Great macro, love the little guy :-)
It is a nice shot of the little fella :) You have discovered a perrenial problem that bugs all close up work. The closer you are the narrower the depth of field. One method to maximise the use of dof is to pre focus to the nearest your lens can and then move the camera back and forward slowly to ge the focus rather than trying to focus ith the lens controls. There is twice as much in focus behind the point of focus as in front of it so you actually need to be focussed just in front of the eyes. All these things are ideal of course and it isn't easy with creatures who are quick and likely to move at any moment. You will see people talking aboput the same problems with butterfly and bug shots. You don't want to use light and upset the subject so a lot of luck is involved too. You could try just a little less focal length perhaps about halfway on that lens, pre focus the lens and rock gently back and forth till you get the focus and shot you want. Good luck - keep trying. I think you have a terrific shot here already - just gotta keep at it to get the changes you want.
Absolutely wonderful. I see the blur on the nose. I've had some success by pulling back just a bit, zooming back in just a tiny bit and thereby pulling the focus forward a tad. However, then you lose some to the rear so its a trade-off. Good shot!
Super clarity and details. Excellent
I think it's just perfect! Unless you have absolutely fancy equipment - this is the best you can hope for. DOF is always a trade off in closeups and you did just splendid!
I have a terrible time with lizards! It always seems like the nose is out of focus! I don't think it really matters on this shot because the eyes have incredible detail and steal the show!
Excellent close-up shot...Cath
