Description
The mysterious decline of the Black-veined White has been the subject of discussion amongst entomologists for over a century. This impressive butterfly became extinct in Britain in the 1920s. Since then, many reintroductions have been attempted, all of which have failed.
It is a large species with a powerful, soaring flight. When they become worn, the wings look like parchment patterned with distinctive black veins.
So as this was taken in Wiltshire either I am wrong in the identification or this or is a very rare find indeed!! I captured this one first thing in the morning whilst it was covered in dew..

Absolutely superbly Macro Dear Friend!!!Bravissimo!V:DDD.Hugsxx
A beautiful macro shot of this lovely looking butterfly!
Beautiful butty, The colours and drops on the wings, is excellent. Thank you for your pics and explanations. Hugs Danny
What a fantastic macro. Outstanding details and perfect DOF. Looks most beautiful!!
The wings have some transparency already... superb macro, especially the dew. Perhaps you should show this to your local entomological society! Outstanding, as always.
A very fortunate and extremely unlikely find Danny -- CONGRATS! A beautiful photo of this rare butty. Unfortunately, though we may try to save them, some species are just destined to become extinct, despite our best efforts.
So delicate and lovely! Even the blooms but the drops of water on the wings is fascinating. Great capture!
Fantastic Macro Danny!
OMG! So ultra beautiful!
Oh!!! what a beauty!!!wonderful macro for my favs!!! Congratulations Danny!
A fantastic masterpiece with gorgeous colors, excellent work!!
"Magnifique" !!! I'm not so sad for this butterfly because we can find it commonly in the south of France, in Spain and north Africa; But it is effectively noted as extinct in Britanny... http://www.ariege.com/wildlife-report/2006/may06.html http://www.answers.com/topic/black-veined-white
gorgeous in full screen right down to the water drops! maybe Mother Nature is replenishing :D
The dew makes a crisp display of this beautiful butterfly and I hope for your sake it is the rare find.
Absolutely gorgeous shot! I hope it is what you think it is, and maybe a good sign for them.
Outstanding macro!
Wouldn't it be amazing if this is the rare butty you describe. It certainly is a beauty and such an excellent and very clear shot. CC
Beautiful capture of this butterfly. Sad news for that which is gone forever. When will we ever learn! When will we ever learn. Aloha
Well since it is extinct in the UK - you can't possibly have... Or should someone have erred? Great Macro! Just superb!
WoW! look at the dew. Never seen such a beautiful shot. Nor have i ever seen dew on a living moving thing.
Fantastic and impressive macro of great beauty and detail......!!!!
Beautiful!
Lucky catch. Wanderful macro!
Beautiful capture of a most spectacular butterfly. The rarity of its finding makes for a more valuable image. The vibrant pink flower highlights the black and translucent-white contrast in the wings exposing their uniqueness and beauty. Great POV. The downward facing flower and ascending fore-legs creates a wonderful visual experience. Thank you for sharing.
wonderful macro...love the droplets.....and the veins.....
Extinct ? I even didn't know of it's existance :-). The veins are different than the ones of the butties I know.. that's for sure.. maybe you are right, maybe this is a very rare find indeed.. Anyway.. the way you've captured this beauty is ..ehhhh.. beautiful :-))
Most beautiful! Fantastic.
Well even if it's just passing thru it is a lovely butterfly beautifully captured.
Maybe you're having a part in documenting a comeback!!!!!!! Excellent work Danny!!!!
