Description
The Boer community in South Africa proudly commemorated the 150th birthday of the "Vierkleur" (quad colored) flag on Saturday. The colors of Dutch heritage (orange, white & blue) still evident in the red, white and blue. Gun salutes were fired and as the smoke cleared the flag was hailed. Characteristically a lot of fun was had and people wore traditional attire and a number brought along their horses and joined in a parade.
The young ladies had me mighty proud but they also served as a stark reminder of the times they and the moms had to bear the brunt of wars in the past. I hope you enjoy a glimpse of something unique South African.

Great rendition of your holiday... the old with the new (coloured flag).
That must've been some experience!!! Gee, but the vierkleur were flying in SA a loooonng time ago!! WAY before my time!! Lovely selective colouring enhancing the subject!! 8;o)
Oranje Blanje Blue !! Collors of the Dutch Republic and the VOC. Great to remember it like this. We now have the Red White Blue too (since 1936), we add the Orange when we celebrate the Monarchy ! Thanks for this photo.. impressive
Great shot. Really excellant colors.
excellent insight into the History od SA well done Piet
Nice to know that we have vexillologists at RR!!! LOL Interesting presentation of old and new like Janalene mentioned. If you look at SA's previous flag, there was a small 4-coloured flag too. Here is a link and some history about the previous South African flag ... http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/za_old.html. Nice capture Piet! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent capture and beautiful selective coloring. Superb!!
This must have been one of those moments when the heart wells with pride and the spirit soars. I love the selective coloring and the sepia effect. You will eventually cause me to go find a book on more of your history and culture there. I am really quite ignorant of either. Very rich photo.
Love the selective coloring too! Great image!!! Bravo!!!
Yes like PJ I have become even more interested in learning more about Africa. My heart beat quickens when I see the incredible pictures you share. Love your presentation on this one. I have one in my gallery similar. Take care:0)bonita

Fascinating shot Piet. Nice touch a colored flag and a two tone conbination. Thanks for the info too!
Good idea the sepia tones for this one, seems a historical shot. I love the flag in this way, it seems in 3D. An interesting commemoration. Have a nice evening my friend. Hugs
Superb capture, Oom Piet. Stunning presentation! It is good to remember, to hear the silent voices of the past. Hugs. Di.
Full of history this pic ! Great the tonal colour.
Beautiful, great presentation as always, really draws ones eyes straight to the flag.
What a wonderful capture of history! Outstanding image !!!
Hi Piet, nice shot and the sepia tones look great and contrast well with the flag. Thanks for the historical info too, we have lots to learn about each others countries!! Cheers from Louise xxx
I just love learning history of other cultures...thank you for sharing....beautiful capture
What a brilliant presentation! I love the blending of old and new as shown by the bright colors against the sepia tones! Excellent job to commemorate this event. :0)
I love how the flag just pops Piet. Love the horses, ;), excellent!
Fabulous presentation of days gone by. Although you took it last weekend, it reminds me of the fifties for some reason. Great tone and I like the selective coloring. Neat capture for sure, and thanks for the info that went along with it!!!
Beautiful...
That looked familiar! Good shot and cool work with the selective coloring! Not to forget about a lesson learned! Not taking just an image but knowledge from here!
Like the way you used selective colors to celebrate your culture. You know, Piet, change the flag and this could be Texas!
Wonderful composition and tonal effects in this shot, my friend! Other than the flag, it looks like a sepia tone photo.
Very, very beautiful! Fantastic composition!!! Hugzzz. Delia
