You almost pity her. As you turn away, your foot gently touches the metal gate. The sound is so tiny that an insect might have missed it. Please, let her miss it as well. Surely she would ignore it, having just fed. You freeze and try to become part of the wall behind you. Breathing stops. Movement stops. Even thought stops. But nothing can stop the violent pounding of the blood as it races through your heart, each beat desperate to complete its cycle before life ends. Did she hear? Maybe the slurping of her snake-like tongue as it slithers over her bloody teeth had hidden the noise.
