Yes I know it has a red head not belly.lol. This is a male red-bellied woodpecker. It does have a red streak that run down the middle of it's belly (thus the name). Hope you like it. As always, C&C are welcome and appreciated.

What a shot! I like to think that the first ornithologists who came upon woodpeckers (red-bellied, red-headed, downy, pileated, etc.) were a little giddy with the whole thing (and maybe had full wine skins, to boot) and got a wee bit ahead of themselves when deciding upon misnomers for the different species... ;) It's confusing to say the least! But, hey... this is beautiful!! :)

I am glad I checked the LWITG feature of the Photo Forum. Checking images fairly often, I missed this excellent photo. We have the RedBellied here, one visiting every morning. Yet, not a good shot yet. Yeppie, this is a male and no red belly. The shot is quite well done, clear in focus with dof and exposure just right. Thanks for showing a bird I have tried often to "capture" but have not been so successful. One film shot years ago...the local developer said he did not have a color reference for the "red" and would not print it..who knows. If you get a chance, IM me and let me know more about the shot, cam, exposure, lens, etc.? If not , that is ok. I still plan to get a good pic one of these neat squawkers. Thanks. Tom.
