Here's the other big painting project for this summer, a 2' x 4' depiction of two of the ladies in the life of John Carter of Mars. For those unfamiliar with him of them, they're all from the second largest series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Incomparable Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium" is John wife and frequent target of kidnapping plots by the lusting leaders of other Martian city-states. That's my version of her on the left. The other lady is Thuvia, who has a talent for mentally controlling the SUV-sized lions called banths. She would like to have been John's wife but once she met Dejah, things were fine between them. In fact, she married their son Carthoris (he takes after his dad). Like yesterday's "Barbarianette and Pet" this is still being painted. I'm letting it thoroughly dry before applying color to it next week. And I'm already thinking of reusing the ladies in a substantially different and even bigger piece. Woola, John's phenomenally ugly, extremely faithful, and quite deadly "dog" kept wanting to get into this picture and if Dejah can have Woola then Thuvia should get a banth..... At the rate I paint, look for this second version around December. And now I'm thinking a third piece with Dejah's daughter Tara of Helium and granddaughter Llana of Gathol..... okay, February?
