Description
Rising to 2510 feet (765 meters) near the town of Westport in County Mayo, the quartzite peak of Croach Patrick is the site for many christians to go bare foot and tread up to the summit in pilgrimage each year. However it was a pagan sacred place long before the arrival of Christianity. For the Celtic peoples of Ireland it was the dwelling place of the deity Crom Dubh and the principal site of the harvest festival of Lughnasa, traditionally held around August 1 (until the mid-nineteenth century only women were allowed on the summit during this pilgrimage and childless women would sleep on the summit during Lughnasa eve in the hope of encouraging fertility). According to popular Christian stories, St. Patrick visited the sacred mountain during the festival time in AD 441 and spent forty days and forty nights banishing dragons, snakes, and demonic forces from the site, while there may still perhaps be demonic forces, and Dragons are pure myth.. It is curious that there are no snakes in Ireland..

You have a great eye for a super shot Danny. The pic draws you right in and is most excellent. Thanks as always for the associated history.
For shure this stairs arrive in a mystical place ! Perfect tittle Danny.... and one of my favorites songs too ! I love this sort of composition. Just magic. Hugs
Beautiful climb to pureness. Excellent. Aloha
As sson as I saw the thumb, I knew it was Croach Patrick. Didn't know about the pagan association. Thanks for the lovley view and history lesson.
I'm having the same issue with my image. It was there at first, but I went to edit it and it is no longer showing up, though RR shows it as still there when I go back to edit. Anyway, terrific shot. Did Led Zepplin know about this place?
oh yes, thank you for this information and thanks for sharing this excellent landscape!!! Good day and hugs ;)
Snakes? Snakes? It's simple: water's too cold for cottonmouth. Patrick/Patricius--just another Italian ne'er-do-well half the Irish population is named after. In ole Medico they do it long distance and on their knees, but when they get there there's a moving sidewalk in front of the decisive icon....
WOW Daniel.. This is really another amazing well seen shot from the pro man! Love the angle and the POV is fantastic tho.. And what an info about that place.. Love it and thank you for that amazing post my friend.. Wish you a happy day.. JOE
A superb image Danny!!!!!!! It really leads your eye to the heavens!!!!!
...to Heaven!!! very surprising and amazing place, superb shot:-)
Those kind of long short rise steps break the stride of power. Not really a Jacob's ladder, the idea of tying heaven to earth by an access device is exegetically honest.
Great photo and interesting history.
Ok i'll go if you give me a pigy back lol I would need on up there. Beautifully taken and on a lovley day too. Cathy xoxoxo
Huffity puff, could be a long climb, I like the view from here...Nice work Dan! Aloha!
