Description
Toasting for friendship - and philosophy
This month's theme in 2D forum is to create a picture inspired by a book or a song. This painting of mine is from (at least) two books: raymond Chandler's The long Goodbye and .. the other one's title I can't remember *lol* - it must have been a book written about Jean-Paul Sartre... :-)
----
You know Philip Marlowe, hard boiled detective created by Raymond Chandler? Marlowe isn't only "hard boiled", he's also human, and loyal to truth, and his friends (not so many of them are met in Chandler's books). In the end of The Long Goodbye (one of the best ever (crime) novels), Marlowe orders two drinks (gimlets) although he's alone in the bar; the extra drink is for his friend, Terry Lennox, his friend in spite of his terrible betrayal.
At the same times, 1940's in Europe, the philosopher of 20th century, Jean-Paul Sartre, had his drink in paris, maybe in La Coupole frustrated to too complicated expressions of philosophy. He looks at his glass, and turns it around, looks at it again... "There it is! It's simple as this glass! It's everywhere. You see the truth (of this glass) differently depending on which side , and in which lighting you at it!" That is the basic of relativism in philosophy - the point of view you choose influences the way you see the essence of things, the essence of truth.
Truth is always a complicated matter. Philip Marlowe saw a human being, friendship there were some others can see betrayal, and evil. He looked at it from another point of view.

This June theme is so inspiring!
If you want you can read even more in 2D Forum. There are lots of great discussion and beautiful images, too, of course. :-)
Here's a thread for this picture above.
Toasting for Sartre & Chandler.
And here's another thread where's my image of a mystery story: What's the Time?.

Painted in PhotoShop and Painter.
I've used reference photos from www.imageafter.com, and from www.morguefile.com. Special thanks for Anita Patterson Pepper (morguefile.com) for the photo of a sitting girl.
Thanks for your interest. I'd be really happy if you've got some time to leave your comment here too. Thanks!

Wonderful painting. Draws my thoughts to many potential stories. The empty chair is mysterious and the mystery is heightened by the subdued lighting and shadows. Great concept and theme image. Excellent work!
excellent work perfect for the challenge ... i am very impressed by your style always ... well done V!
I just love your work! And this is an interesting shift from your fantasy stuff! Wonderful image!! I love your sense of light and shadow!!
I too love the empty chair, and the candle only accentuates the solitude. Lovely work dear Titta, thank you for creating and sharing hugest hugsxxx
...great mood and atmosphere here Titta ! --- kind of like a Raymond Chandler scene as painted by Edward Hopper . I've never read Chandler ( should ) - but I did see the movie version of 'The Long Goodbye' with Elliot Gould ( an odd offbeat film - but still entertaining ) -- love the colour, shading, composition and the woman's contemplative expression -( though I feel her features could be softened somewhat - or something ) - still - the overall effect of this piece is wonderful.
Thanks you all! Doug, I'd be happy if I ever could reach Edward Hopper's level! He's painted some marvellous bar scenes. :-)
Truth is subjective I guess... even "fact" can be open to interpretation! It's one of the sad aspects of religious dogma, that people of different faiths do battle over supremacy when all faiths are merely different ways of looking at the same thing... that which opens our minds by switching on the spiritual centres of the brain. Anyway, as for your image, I'm most drawn to the vibrancy of the colours of her hair and those of the wall panels. Lovely work again hugs :-)
I think my previous comment showed why I don't comment as often around here as I used to gah to the brain frazzle. I really love the quality of light in this image, and the feeling of waiting for the friend to return to fill their empty glass. Thank you as always for sharing all you do :) big hugs
Thanks, Jim & cassie too!!!!! --- One definition for the truth (or even fact!) is that it's well argued belief. let's just think about how it's gone quite a short time when the truth 8and fact) was that the Earth is flat, and the centre of the universe... Cassie, I'm so happy I have now two lovely comments from you here! quite special!!!! hugs :-)
I think you have enough ideas to do several works on this theme, Titta. Your soft paintwork goes so well with the late night mood after having a few drinks. The empty chair and waiting drink give such an air of expectation...
