Description
'Tomo' Means 'Virtue,'
Or it can be 'Companion.'
My Tomo-san was a virtuous companion....
Because of her, I found out
What prejudice is:
Interference and chagrin,
Frustration and bitterness,...
Innocent friendship dropped.

The above picture is not a literal recreation of the incident mentioned in the poem, rather, it is an attempt at rendering the emotional impact of the moment. It was 1959 Japan, and I was 21. I had met Tomo through the offices of a mutual Japanese male friend. Tomo was twenty-three. She and another female friend wanted to practice their English speaking skills and I wanted to see places in the northern Kyushu area and attend interesting local happenings. I remember that the three of us went to a modern play about the Japanese occupation of Manchuria. There was nothing sexual in our relationship. However, about three months into our relationship, the parents of Tomo and her friend grew concerned, when they learned of our friendship. The girls were of marriageable age and they feared association with an American would ruin their daughters' reputations. Then, the parents still mostly arranged marriages for their children. (I understand that is far less the case these days.) Tomo met with me and explained. I was stunned and she was very uncomfortable. Our meeting was brief. I never saw Tomo or her friend again. I don't blame their parents. If I had been them, I would probably have had similar concerns. They never met me. To this day, it saddens me.
The face is a fair likeness of how I looked at 21; although, my body was shorter and a bit more stocky looking. Tomo was not as pretty as Miki, yet was still an attractive woman. She was more trim than Miki, but not skinny. Her personality was beautiful and what I most valued about her. If I was striving for reality, I would have added a couple of shopkeepers and some more shoppers out in the street. I felt, though, that to do so would obscure the emotional impact of the moment, so I deliberately left them out. Besides, at the time, there was no awareness of anyone else but her and me.

Well done. Nice narrative also.
the costumes brings back memories of girls in school wearing bobby socks and hoop skirts. excellent illustration
Her expression conveys your story well. A couple suggestions if I dare: bicycle disproportionally large, widen the gap between truck and building, and soften shadows. If you like it as is, you are the artist and I am only a single viewer. Your heart was in this one. Well done.
The story is sad but you write with your heart and understanding. The composition and recreation are fantastic. My Bryce would have crashed and not let me create something this complex. You must have a big, fast computer :)
Yes, Nancy, I have 1GB of RAM and I still push it into telling me, "No can do, Chum!
@Skiwillgee, agree about the bicycle, he is to large, as for the truck, streets in Japan can be that narrow, i have been there several times and saw streets for wich i wonder how it was possible that even their small cars could squeeze through, and than that car was then followed by an imported European BMW (Steer on the left off course), they fit through. But i am missing something else, where are the poles with the electric wires, transformators and such?
Extremely well done craftmanship and the story is touching indeed. A thing all of us young men had to endure along with the isolation from our own families and country in our youth. Prejudice - because you are white, or because you dont speak the language, or both. yea - i also encountered issues at 21, and longer. Actually I wasnt prejudice until lately. thanks to big ears bush and his treatment of anyone who is not a rich republikan, and vincente as well. enough! Thanks for sharing menories of your youthful soul and reminding us of social ssues of 1960 ... Salute my friend. Dwayne
This definitely is a beautiful image like a scene from a movie. Even the air in the image is carrying the sad feeling of the time. By the way, I'm living in Japan and really impressed by the details of the background. Interestingly without reading your note, I could tell the location must be somewhere in Kyusyu or Kobe area.
Very touching and well done seen.
I see the sadden here and your story is super. and you did right at the time too.
Hearttouching.. I have grown up for 5 years away from home (Kuwait) and lost touch to all the friends i had that time. Would be so easy now with the internet. And there are girls, i remember , i defeninatly regret not having.....ehhhh..!!! lol Anyway , some scars of the past never heal, and some leave a slight but warm pain within, they saden you, but for no money yould give them away Fine attention to detail, and strong convincing textures
Wonderful tense mood created here! A climax to action. Love the amount of detail!
An Excellent, excellent picture, displaying a very emotional period. Picture is very well done, and THANKS, for sharing of that part of your life. WELL DONE, my friend
