Description
A bit of a mystery at first as I was informed this was called the Blue Buzzard which if so I had never heard of it before, and in any case had not got one in my collection of Birds of prey, but I think this is in fact the Long legged Buzzard, is therefore a scarce winter visitor, usually to the east coast. Numbers vary from year to year, from almost none in a poor year and up to 250 in exceptional ones.
Takes over from Common Buzzard as the most conspicuous bird of prey above the tree-line in Scandinavia. Numbers vary enormously from year to year but if there are plenty of lemmings, then places such as Karigasniemi in Finland and Abisko in Sweden can support dozens of Rough-legs. In winter, their numbers are even more unpredictable but they can occur anywhere in central Europe from Britain to the Balkans. One of the best areas for wintering Rough-legs is the Hortobagy plain in Hungary.

Beautiful creature! Great shot! You won't believe this, but my eyes played a trick on me when I looked at the thumb. On first glance, it appeared to be the shape of an eagle (I know it's a Blue Buzzard, just saying what I thought) -- filled in with a cloudy sky (the head colors), and rocky terrains (the body). LOL... I'm glad I saw the full shot. This is quite a magnificent creature.
Impressive and powerful image of this wonderful looking bird.
Lovely work here Danny. The black background really makes him stand out.
Wonderful photo. I like the mottled feather coloring. Thanks again.
Beautiful capture of this awsome bird. I like the detailed captured here and the sharpness. A sharp image tends to be very appealing to human eye. I have captured some really time critical images that were not as sharp and people do not like them. Great job here
what a gorgeous bird.....it looks perfect with this dark background.....and such a wonderful freathers...love it
Excellent work.
Oooh weeee!!! This shot is just beyond magnificent!!! The light is exceptional and the dark background really adds alot of mystery to it. Well done indeed. #:O)

super capture and job of removing background. a very regal bird
impressiv bird!!! and fantastic capture!!! well done my friend ;) good week and kiss
Absolutely great one, and one of the VERY best of manyexactly the right light and shade, subdued color--WHOOSH! And don't he look like a rough-legged little bustard as well! Euro "buzzard" is a real hawk (Latin Buteo), and one discovers now, thanks to your post, that the name "Butch" and variations all derive from Buzzard, with Bustard also included. In the New World in English vultures are often called buzzards, but the supposedly dark reputation of "buzzard", old world and new, as compared to say eagles is the same in both areas, and unjustified. Even turkey vultures are predators at times, and the American bald eagle, as Franklin held and joked about, is, though a great fisherman, also a hearty scavenger....In Latin such linguistic and iconic associations don't exist as I recall....
Fantastic shot! What an awesome guy!
An other EXCELENTLY presented bird of prey of a middle class. (size). Well done.
