Description
Tsar Saltan is a Russian fairy tale rendered into a poem by Pushkin.
The dolls in this set are decorated with scenes from the story of Tsar Saltan... you figured that part out by now, eh? The dolls are recent work. Heavily decorated and lacquered in a formal style. Bought them at a craft show in Ottawa from a lady who was painting more... excellent work.
The 'tour' of this room is just about over. Only one or two more images to go. If you are just joining the tour, you have a way to go yet!
Enjoy; thanks for looking.
For the really curious viewers. . . .

The link above gives a synopsis of the story and the complete poem in Russian and in English as follow-on links. That is my recommendation... follow the links... both of them. The illustrations differ for each version, but both sets are a feast for the eyes.

Pushkin's grandfather was an African slave. Tsar is in origin "Caesar" and from it also derives "Kaiser". Russia among the orthodox is the Third Rome. The coloring and some aspects of the motives suggest Persian, with the direction of the influence open, and including the ancient Scythians and much later Turkish middlemen. When Napoleon saw Moscow burning in the distance, he is said to have exclaimed one word, "Scythians!", and already began planning his retreat. He won Borodino, though he lost the war. The Germans, who studied the tactics of the Confederates in the American War Between the States, weren't smart or learned enough to appreciate the drift of Napoleon's ejaculation. At least he had a reason to invade. Great pic, and you also picked the right one for the thumb, which is superb!
