Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2026 Mar 05 8:06 pm)

Subject: Very Disappointed

Lately I've been very disappointed with what has been created for Poser.  With the exception of Poser 8 all sorts of good accessories were created for the Poser characters in the initial package.  Up to Poser 7 all sorts of great accessories were made to expand their wardrobes among other enhancements.  What happened?

Some of the people who were content creators suffered or have been suffering from mundane human ailments like burnouts, aging, shrinking incomes and of course, death.  Ever thought of maybe creating something?

I'm getting up in the years. Can't climb up the stairs like I used to,  to get to the computer.  Can't move the mouse or stylus like  I used to either. Saw the neat newest poser app but sadly have to pass them by. I  ran out of ideas and steam.

I don't know where others are  but this is simply my view. It's not set in stone or Canon.

As a matter of fact,  this may be my last post on Renderosity.

Thanks for reading and memories...

Dont give up!

I retired 20 years ago, and Poser is my hobby.

I am providing content for Poser11+, mostly freebies, and find it fun and do not want Poser to die.

I am currently doing two items a month

I am currently posting two free items a month (self imposed limit, I could do more)

Besides, I get .20 per item as rewardd points :D

Renderosity has lost quite a few Poser content vendors in the last year or so which is a very unfortunate situation. Most of them have completely migrated to making DS content or to DAZ itself as vendors there. I feel that we need to support those vendors who are still creating Poser content for Renderosity and let them know how much we appreciate their efforts, as well as those creating freebie content.

Please, if you buy Poser content from one of our vendors, be sure to go to the product page and leave a positive review. The feedback is what encourages them to keep creating. Ditto for our freestuff contributors!

Whe Dawn and Dusk were fmoved to Rendo, vendors weregiven them plus  morph packs in return for two marketplace items.

of course that was different management

Now, retail (without a sale) for LH2/LF2 is 160

LF2 and LH2 are only $40 each. That's only $80, not $160

Poser 7 was back in 2006, when Poser was still owned by e-frontier. You seem to be saying that the Smith Micro years added... nothing?

Let us be fair.

Back i the P7 days, Poser did software and DS did content and the world was good.

That continued until DS deveoped their own software and ventuly native content for its content.

Poser native figures were mostly to show off new features and never received much developer support. but there were several other companies that still created content for poser,

RDNA (bought out by DAZ) Renderosity, PoserWorld, Poser Direct etc.

That was then,this is now.

Rendo has several rules that I refuse to follow, because it is not Poser 7 any more and the rules make working on content a pain.

Unless Poser finds a way to create  vendors or get them back, Poser users will be using old content which is not good for its future.

Nota Bene: Daz Studio was first developed in 2001-2002, and DS v1.0 was initially released in October of 2005 - long before Poser 7 came out. The reason DAZ did it had more to do with survival in an uncertain time** than it did with being evil or whatever. Along the way, they found lots and lots of neat features and UI enhancements to pack into it.

I will posit that it isn't just Poser at risk these days, though.

Apps like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and even Grok on X(!) are rapidly becoming better at making visual art these days. Each passing month makes it less "AI Slop" and more 'art'. My Boomer in-laws use Midjourney and make pin money off of it these days, FFS. Put this way: The moment an AI app comes along that can make a character which doesn't have 38 fingers, has the exact same visual looks and environments through a series of comic panels, can be done under different artistic styles (photoreal, manga sketch, celshaded toon, etc), and most importantly, doesn't require writing a novel-length prompt to create? The moment that happens, Poser is doomed. DS is doomed. I daresay even Blender will be doomed.

But... today is not (yet) that day.

Also, any or all of them can adapt and incorporate AI to make something that lets you create a unique figure/object, then let AI fill in the animation, poses ("pose this figure like the dude in this picture, rotate 90 degrees on the X-axis..."), movement, etc. The first one that does it without exploding will make a killing.

** I say "survival" because Poser swapped hands from one shaky company to the next, demanded that DAZ pay insane license fees to use dynamics and face-room stuff in Poser 5 if you used V3/Aiko/Stephanie/Laura, etc. it was a fairly turbulent time.

As for vendors? Back in the old days if we wanted something but couldn't find or afford it, we cracked open a mesh-jacking app suite and built it ourselves. We screwed up a lot, and most of it came out looking fugly... but we learned, and occasionally we made some cool stuff that looked pretty when we tossed it in a scene or on a character. If we weren't too embarrassed by it (or simply had no shame), we parked it on Free Stuff so that other people can download it, play with it, expand it, improve it, etc.

Maybe foster that kind of community again, and you won't rely so much on vendors?

Poser 11 and Wings 3D is all I need to keep myself amused.

I focus on improving the 2nd and 3rd Generation DAZ figures with the occasional 4th Gen mesh sprinkled in.

But I also find the Poser 3/4/5 and 6 figures to be quite worthy of my time.

Here are some examples of Poser 3/4 Dork and Posette and derivates:

And here's my latest Judy 5 morph:

Poser 11 is very capeable and with the help of a simple modeller like Wings3D you can morph and re-rig any figure or clothing item until it fits your needs.

Your time and talent are the only limits. And given that Poser files are not encrypted, you actually have way more freedom to modify your content than you have in DAZ Studio.

Sadly, it seems like 99% of Poser users only use 1% of Posers capeabilities and never take the time to learn all the various tools it actually provides.

Also sadly, I can't recommend Poser 12 or 13 at all, as many of Poser 11's advanced features relied on 3rd party Python scripts, which have been disabled.

Back in the Poser 6-era, Miki 1 had the most realistic out-of-the-box sculpting as well as expressions of all Poser figures, including the DAZ ones.

(Which were still somewhat superior, though, because they had the more efficient mesh geometry)

Sadly, her rigging also left much to be desired.

Here's a weightmapped copy of her, re-rigged in Poser 11:

So, yeah, while basically all Poser content has more or less problems, Poser itself provides all the tools to fix these problems, if you are willing to take the time to learn them.

I made a lot of stuff that I'd hoped to release - some free, some for sale - but put them on indefinite hold, due to my cancer diagnosis at the time.

Fortunately, that's all in the past, although I'm still recovering from the treatment.  I got of easy, compared to many, but I still don't have a great deal of energy.

The energy I do have to spare is spent focusing on my family right now; my daughter has been having a hard time of things and we're trying to help her through that.

The upshot is, Poser is unfortunately, way down on my list of things to do.

Thank you.  Doing my best.

As for the comments from Pengy and others, I agree entirely.  Learn to make your own stuff.  Wings, for example, is dead easy to learn and you'll be making content in no time.

While E-Frontier did a lot of positive things, they also made changes to their store that resulted in a financial massacre for content creators. A lot of creators that were happily creating only for Poser either gave up or started to do things for DAZ. I know one vendor that saw their sales drop by 80%. I think there were plenty of positives with Smith Micro (we always had a great relationship with them) and I'll say it - once Renderosity got a hold of Poser, they really upped their game in good relations with content creators.

When saving DS files you have a choice between encrypting or not encrypting. There is also a way to decrypt files within DS by using Windows/Pane/Batchconvert.

@Penguinisto I'm not sure I totally agree with you about the use of ai. It very much depends on the person and whether they are process or final product orientated.

I enjoy the process of going into Zbrush and moving verts around to create things, I wouldn't get the same joy from utilising text to create something artistic other than writing stories(Books are a different thing altogether) I'm 66 so qualify as part of the boomer group mentioned in your post. The only way I could see using ai is as part of the process like one might use filter forge. I guess at heart I'm too much of a control freak and like to say what goes into my creative art.
