Subject: You are invited to a Movie Night challenge!

evilproducer ( ) posted Tue, 05 November 2013 at 7:44 PM · edited Mon, 22 June 2026 at 5:54 AM

Attached Link: Carrara Challenge VI: Movie Night

I just wanted to let you all know that we have a new Carrara challenge at the DAZ 3D Carrara Discussion forum.

The theme is Movie Night:

What does a movie night mean for you? Is it an intimate evening at home with a date and the latest romantic comedy? Maybe it’s a night out on the town with a group of friends taking in the latest blockbuster? Perhaps it’s a big bowl of popcorn and your family watching classic family fair in front of the TV? Maybe it’s catching a double feature at the drive-in? Or perhaps it’s all about the film.

This theme is meant to have a broad interpretation. Renders could show studies of people watching the movies, recreations of scenes from your favorite movies, scenes you wish were in your favorite movies or perhaps scenes depicting or illustrating different film genres, such as cartoons, film noire, etc.

The official rules and WIP thread can be found by following the attached link! Hope to see you there!

evilproducer ( ) posted Tue, 05 November 2013 at 8:04 PM

I forgot to mention, RingoMontfort has very generously agreed to donate prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place vote getters, plus honorable mention!

Like the last challenge, DAZ 3D is also very generously providing store credit for those that place in the top three and honorable mention.

Details can be found by following the link that I attached in the first post of this thread.

nice work evil, would be great if they let manstan back so he could play - he did some great work last time.

manleystanley ( ) posted Wed, 06 November 2013 at 8:57 AM

I'd really appreciate it if you all could move this to the carraracafe.

Not only so I could take part, but it would also help to move more carraraest to the cafe.

evilproducer ( ) posted Wed, 06 November 2013 at 5:43 PM

I typed a big response before but it appears the forum ate it. Unless the Rendo forums have a similar caching bug that Carrara Cafe used to have... Maybe there are four or five duplicate posts, thus making me look like an a--hole. ;-)

evilproducer ( ) posted Wed, 06 November 2013 at 5:51 PM

Holy crap! It posted!

Stan, I'm not sure I have the power to move the challenge. Since you're banned I'm not sure if I can post WIPs or entries on your behalf, as that may be circumventing the ban in the Mod's eyes, although a couple of them seem to getting pretty full of themselves and their perceived powers.

I'm going to try and look into it further, but I can't make any promises.

hya man stan, there's absolutley nothing wrong with you starting a wip thread  here or on carrara cafe .

as you know, I was asked officially not to put your wips on daz, but that shouldn't stop you doing the work for the challenge of it.

it's all about the approach and the journey and making us better carrara users.

personally I find it easier to navigatre round here, despite Holly's excellent hard work. I'm not getting notifications from here anymore though.

The present challenge needs to be on daz forum for daz to sponsor it. It's also better for our generous and kind private sp[onsors as well - as the traffic is better on daz forum.

There is also nothing to stop you approaching another non daz sponsor to sponsor a challenge as well and hold it here or at the cafe. The idea would be to have it out of synch with our challenge so there is no conflict.

Ken Gillard, formerly of Daz, used to have a bird sponsorship once a year. He would be a good person to approach as he is kind and generous - as demonstrated by his love of birds http://www.empken.com/.

Or there is lisab http://hivewire3d.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Lisas Botanicals.

Both of those pa's (for want of a better word) make individual things that would not clash with any of the kind and generous sponsors we have had at the da challenges - so there would be no conflict of interest. They are also out in the wasteland and might be very keen to get some publicity.

You need to explain to the pa's why you are doing it (for the love of carrara and to get people to make stuff for carrara - not because you don't like daz :) ) . The more carrara users there are, the more people will buy things made for carrara, the more people will make stuff for carrara and the happier we will all be. Win win.

That said, you need to make sure that you do the right thing by the sponsors, and get their name out there as often as you can.

You saw how many people followed you here from Daz? You got brains, intelligence, charisma and talent.

Turn problems into opportunities.

Go for it.

I used to run six contests a year in this forum using Rendos contest built in structure.  Most people do contests for just doing them versus the prizes.  I've found the prizes aren't as big a motivator as just doing the contest.

If that still seems to be true, I'll talk to Mark about it.

Let me know what you think.

The main thing that bummed me was that I restricted myself from doing them.  We could see if maybe there would be a fair way to work it because I did enjoy doing the Twilight Zone contest.

headwax. ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2013 at 2:43 AM

no need to restrict yourself!!!

I won the first one I organised, gah. When I tried to give the prize to the next in line ,Dartanbeck, our wonderous sponsor, talked me out of it.

The only problem I ran into was that someone was kind enough to vote for myself anon-ymous-ly. That didn't work because one person didn't believe me - fair enough. But I refused to take away the votes for the other people the anonymous-mouse voter had voted for.

It's not as if you are going to cheat. And if anyone was to cheat, what would be the point.?

Other thing is, there are plenty of PA's here on renderosity. The prizes if there are any just need to be poser compatable. Personally I'd like to see manstan be able to enter a challenge, and here or carrara cafe is the  only way at the moment.

manleystanley ( ) posted Thu, 07 November 2013 at 8:42 AM

If I could catch up to Richard he might post for me. Never had an issue with Richard.

I'm not sure which DAZ mod had it in for me, but I do know a certain bryce forum mod that cost me one of my bans for "spaming" her forum with all of 2 posts. The one that was catching flack for having her nose buried in the carrara forum; which, at the time, she didn't use. Hell of a reason to start using carrara though.

But like I said, I don't want to be on the DAZ forum if I can't be me. If some one there has an issue with me, that is their issue, not mine. There is only one DAZ rep turned forum mod I just don't get along with.

None the less I am not know as a finisher. Most of the time I get stuck on some part of a render and never finish it. Even that pirate scene, as far as I'm concernered, wasn't finished. It needed a good 12 renders to get the lighting set right. That twilight zone scene is stuck at no motion blur. I can get motion blur to work fine in test scenes with other objects, even scenes using the same trash cans. But for some reason I just can't get it in that scene. That swamp scene, probably the heaviest scene I have ever staged; with 7 figures and 11 replicatoprs, is down to quality renders to set lighting. But takes 10-12 hour for a single shot; I have 9 cameras to get shots with. And that is before reposing the figures to render their reaction to the "frog" man.

Now I have a threater interior scene I was working on; not sure if I can track down the name of the artest that made it though. Spent a lot of time with the lighting, but fell apart when I started putting people in seats, my comp started baliking at 5, but that was a different comp. Still, this one starts getting slow at 7.

I was in the first DAZ Carrara Challenge. It was fun. I haven't had the time since then to participate in one. Makes me sad.

I think challenges and contests are great. I'd try my best to participate here if you decided to resurrect them here. And I don't think it's necessary to exclude yourself. I know how good your work is, and I still have no problem with it. We're all just one big Carrara family, right? :)

Often the journey is far more satisfying than reaching the destination. When you reach your destination, the journey's over.

How's that for ancient wisdom? Heh, heh.

I love the journey, the creation process, too. My problem is that if I don't plan on reaching the destination, the journey isn't as satisfying. I'm always starting something that I realize very quickly isn't going to reach it's end, and I have to stop. No destination takes the fun out of it for me.

And about your theatre project. I'm wondering, couldn't the replicator work in creating an audience? Just had another thought! What about creating and posing the character, then exporting as an obj then importing it back into your scene. That should lower the load a bit.

manleystanley ( ) posted Fri, 08 November 2013 at 8:27 AM

What if I use a volumetric cloud for cigerette smoke in the theater? Hey, it was the 50's lol

Oh I don't know yet, haven't found that theater interior.

Do you have so may scenes/wips you just can't find the one you are looking for, or is it just me?

Would a volumetric cloud be enough for cigarette smoke in a '50s threatre? Heh, heh.

And yes, I've got so many scenes cluttering up my hard drive it's shameful. I try from time to time to get rid of some of the older ones, but I'm always thinking 'I may want to come back to that one an redo it one day'.

I  really wish Daz would make a usable filter search in the instances tab, if they really loved me they would, but they don't call any more or even write, sob, I feel like I am unwanted and all  they want is my money....

In fact, I feel I am being used and they don't see me as a human bean anymore, just a source of easy cash, oh dear.... ;)

I see you as a human bean...if I squint hard enough...in the right light...in a month with an 'r' in it...usually.

Seems that Carrara Cafe isn't the only one that doesn't notify me of forum replys! ;-)

Sorry I haven't been back here to check! Non-computer life has kept me busy this month!

Anyway, the entry thread for the contest is open! Even if you don't put something in, go on over and check out the work that has been submitted! Even Stu is working on some WIPs. It's been really cool to get an idea of his work flow!

Enough of my jabbering! Here's the link:

Sorry, I didn't even try with this one. Just seemed pointless.

Interesting there was no word here about the DAZ gallery finally opening. I'm seriously considering packing it ;)

Maybe it is a good thing, i don't like their EULA about the gallery.

@Stan, don't worry about it. I think a permanent ban is a bit of a raw deal.

I uploaded one just to see, it went. That is why I am considering putting up renders of every scene I have, finished or not ;)

Of coarse after looking through the gallery I see people violating the no violence rules, bet nudety gets pulled in a heart beat though.

I had a sig pulled because the render was of M4 with "genetica" carved in his chest, but violent scenes with blood and gore seem fine in the gallery.

That's interesting. I've been meaning to play around with decapitation and the particle generator. ;-)

I'm sure it will turn in to having a creature carying around a decapataed head is ok, show a head being decapitated is not.

Like a see through blouse is ok but nudity isn't. Say what?
