hey , a friendly howdy from here
well the recnt challnge we had I tried exporting the splines models that come with carrara and then reimporting them as an object so I could texture them.'
some came in well, some came in as a mess ,
so yes it will probably take more than ten minutes.
grouping obj files and exporting then reimporting sems to make them one mesh
so you could always edit>convert to another modeller with your splines then group them and export them and then reimport as one mesh (facetted?) and see what happens

I decided to toss up a few models into the freestuff here at Rendo and I've been requested that I post them as OBJ.
I don't know anything about exporting a C model to anything. Here's my experience so far.
Let's start with my toy robot model.
The first thing I tried was selecting the robot and just doing a plain brain dead export to OBJ. I opened up the resulting OBJ and the thing doesn't look like a model I would want! The shading domains are nightmares because I created several spline objects in the original beasty and they all have 3 shading domains each. It's a big mess.
So, I thought I'd try something different that might be cleaner.
I took all the chrome parts and grouped them. All the black plastic parts and grouped them. All the regular plastic parts and grouped them. And separated out the dome and the eyes.
Then I exported each one of those groups separately and reopened them. It was a pain to reassemble the robot and retexture him. So once again, this seems sort of dorkish.
I also put up my starship spacedock for free. If you haven't gone over to look at it, I can tell you upfront the thing is sort of beastly. There aren't too many master parts in it but when you duplicate them a whole bunch, well the thing gets messy real fast! It only took me five hours to build the thing because really, it's not that complicated of a structure. However, when you duplicate a bunch of things, it can get complicated in a speedy way!
I selected the spacedock, exported it, and holy dang captain cowman! It exported a huge thing! I couldn't even open it again.
While I know it would be fun to use these models in that wonderous land we call poser, I'm not really in the mood to go through a whole bunch of trouble to export an OBJ model that's functional. I sort of feel bad about it a little bit. If I was trying to sell something, I would feel a lot more obligated to make sure it worked nice and such but these are just freebies so (sadly) my motivation is not particulary impressive.
I'm sort of in the mood to start posting some of my models just for the sake of the joy of sharing (ok, actually, I started thinking that maybe it would be nice if other people got some use out of my models besides myself). Do people need starship spacedocks, toy robots, and balsa airplanes? I have no clue, but for free, who cares?
Would I give away my BIG models (like the Entprise stuff I've been doing?)? It's a conundrum for me. I burned a lot of brain cells and electrons to build some of my stuff and I'm a little selfish about it (gotta be honest). Would I sell things? This is another problem for me. Could I even sell the Enterprise? Seems like Paramount Studios might have something to say on the subject. Plus, I use a lot of plug-ins and that would mean people would need to buy extra stuff to make some of my models work (not sure what makes the most sense).
To get back on topic, if there's a really super easy way to export a model which is made of lots of parts into OBJ format, please post it here as I really don't know how to make it work nice.
If exporting is a deal that is going to cost me more than 10 minutes, I'm already over the line from "super easy way". My Starship Spacedock has gobs of replicated cubes in it. Exporting that mess makes my computer hurt!
Any help, advice, or a friendly howdy is welcome.
