Subject: Creating a "wormhole" effect

DocMatter ( ) posted Wed, 28 September 2011 at 11:02 PM ยท edited Mon, 02 February 2026 at 7:05 AM

I'm trying to create a wormhole effect for a render.  I'm playing with the half torus prop object that comes with C8 (but I'd rather just be able to half of it, but those formulas are wacky).  I've tried all sorts of combinations of glass, fire, exotic glasses, etc... but can't seem to get it even close.  I want it to look a little like the vortex from the old "Sliders" TV show... transparent, but turbulent with a high but changing refraction.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi DocMatter,

There is a bunch of ways to pull this off. First a question, is this for a still or an animated image?

This is for a still image.  GKDantas-- With some texture-tweaking that would be a very cool wormhole, especially if I was doing an animation.  It may also work as a still.  ;)

Here's a quickie I did. Don't know if this is really the look you have in mind though.

Wow!  That's a heckuva good "quickie"!  Where do I start?

I've uploaded the file so you can download it and take a look. The file is in this thread.
