Subject: Boolean and Normals?

Hi everyone. I've got some sort of strange problem with Carrara and a simple boolean operation.

Please - No laughing. I'm using Carrara 3.0.4 under Windows XP.

I took a primitive square and cylinder. Subtracted the cylinder from the square.
Looks great in Carrara. However, In UV Mapper and Poser 7 the exported OBJ of this boolean object looks like crap.
Some of the sides arent visible In Poser 7 and UV Mapper and the circle cut isnt clean like it is in Carrara. I assume this is a problem with normals?
Is there anyway to fix it.
Its pretty frustrating.  :(

The attached image show pics from top to bottom in Carrara, Poser 7 and then UV Mapper.

Help!  :)

 Hi Clint,

Long time no hassle! Booleans in C3 were terrible. There really isn't a work-around for the problems it made. Starting in C4, Booleans received a major workover and function "normally" now.

The best option is to create the shape that you want in the Spline modeler. It will UV map correctly and you can control the density of the geometry on export to .obj.

Did you ever get rid of the disappearing drummers drum kit?

Mark

Hi Mark,

Fantastic to see you still around man!!
Thanks for the response.

Guess I should upgrade to newer software eh.  ;)

Yea, I thought about doing the shape in the spline modeler. I'll give that a try....thanks.

"Did you ever get rid of the disappearing drummers drum kit?"

Hmm...I dont recall this. At my age (46) you start forgetting stuff...LOL....

Mark,

That worked perfectly!
Thanks man.

I'll stick to modeling rather than doing boolean operations going forward,

Thanks again buddy!
Clint

PS - How is Carrara 7? I hear its really nice. Is it time for me to upgrade??

Trust me. You wouldn't regret it. You know, DAZ has been giving away C6 Pro in a variety of magazines and books... It shouldn't cost you too much if you can track down one of those editions.  ;-)

Drummers. Hmmm, the last time we talked your bands drummer split and you had a kit in your garage or something. I take it, he must have shown up sometime.

Oh wow man.....That must have been 5 years back or so.

LOL - Yea - The drums are gone.
We moved from Atlanta to Nashville about 4 years back. We havent started up a new band since being here.
Working to much.  :)

I'll try and poke around for a C6 version.
If you know of anyone that has a CD from a magazine with the C6 version on it let me know.
Maybe I can purchase it and pay for shipping or something.  ;)

As always Mark - Thanks buddy.

Ok  - I'm excited.
I just picked up Carrara 7 Pro.
Whoot.

Is the UV Mapping tool in 7.0 pretty good?
I played around with it a little last night. But not in-depth.

You'll love C7. UV mapping is pretty good and opens doors I think you'll like - along with live painting.

Cool - I plan to spend more time with it this evening.

I was amazed at how little the GUI has changed since version 3. Was good for me since I know that GUI like the back of my hand - saved me a lot of time looking around for the tools and such.  :)
