Subject: Carrara newbie

Hi to all,

I just started on Carrara 5 a few months ago and am really eager to learn. I've got most of the basics (ie very basics) nailed down but I'd like to know how to do the following.
I'm trying to model a plastic bottle with a label on it. The label has an area which is gold foil.
I can do the bottle with the label on it but I just dont get how I can add a gold section to the label. Just to make it more difficult, there's also a logo on the gold and that's just plain black!!

I've been trying for ages but I just dont seem to get anywhere with this. In desperation, I've simulated the gold area in Photoshop and imported the whole label and stuck it on the bottle. It's pretty useless really, but it's all I have!!

Can someone please throw me a few crumbs?!

Thx
Homer

Hi Homer, Welcome to Carrara. What you'll actually need to do is create some multiple photoshop files to be used in different channels in the Shader Room. For example, the full color label that you've already done would go in the color channel. However, you'll need another photoshop file for the foil that only reveals what is shiny and reflective. Just like masking in photoshop, you create masks for use in Carrara to reveal certain visual aspects of the shader. The same mask that reveals the highly reflective foil would probably also be used in the bump channel to help push the foil off of the label just a bit. It's pretty fun to do. You can get as sophisticated or as simple as you want. Post back if you need more clarification. Mark

I did this tutorial based on Mark and Ringo idea for shade domains.

Oh boy,
Thanks guys but I'm having a lot of trouble understanding this!
GKDantas, thanks for that link, but that tutorial went totally over my head at first but what I'm having a problem with is that I'm not actually using shading domains. All I'm doing is creating the bottle in the spline modeller, picking the side of the bottle and drawing a rectangular area where the label is and setting that area to the label image using the texture map. Is this the wrong way to do this - should I be doing this differently?

Hi Homer, You can check out mine here http://www.markbremmer.com/pages/TutMain.html I've got a specific movie for labels in the Dark Arts section. Additionally there is a Carrara tutorial series at Lynda.com

Thanks Mark
That's the exact same way that I'm doing it but what happens when the whole label is, say, black, and some of it is shiny gold? How's that done? at the moment I've just done the whole label in PS and for the gold bits, I've just used a gold style!
