Subject: Soft shadows

I have soft shadows turned on. I get soft shadows when my light source is at an angle from my subject. But if my light source is perpendicular to my subject, the shadows are hard. These are shadows that the subject casts on itself. Is this how soft shadows work in general, or should I be looking at other settings somewhere?

You have to crank up the radius setting on soft shadows to really high (1,000's) for close stuff. You may have to set the quality higher to avoid banding. Patrick

I'm using 1,000-2,500. I'm beginning to think it's a normal that is reversed somewhere on my model and light isn't working on it.
