THE HITCHHIKER John was driving down a lonely country road one night, on his way home from a football game, when he saw a girl standing by the side of the road. She looked lonely and very cold in her thin sweater. John couldn't help feeling sorry for her. He pulled over and offered her his jacket and a ride into town. She accepted gratefully in a thin little voice like a sighing wind. He talked to her as he drove, but she didn't have much to say. John was intrigued by the quality of shy sadness that seemed to cling to her. As he dropped her off on the corner she named, she offered him his jacket back. John laughed and said he would come back for it the next day, and what was her address again? She told him her name was Mary Anne Sumner and her address was 301 Pines. The next day John put on his other jacket, slicked back his hair, and drove out to look for 301 Pines. It was a cemetery. He found his jacket in the last row of headstones, draped over a tombstone with the name MARY ANNE SUMNER.
