In the tradition of games such as this, you have the battle skills of tank/spank/heal. Vanguards are the tanks and play a vital role for the adventuring group. Their job is to keep the enemy's attention focused on them so that other members of the party can kill the antagonist. What a tank may lack in raw damage, they make up for in attrition. With their heavy armor, shields and heavy weaponry, they can survive the toughest brawl and 'beat down' their opponents to insure victory.

It is great!
Love her face! Myself, I'm not so much a fan of the paladin/tank classes. I heal... a lot! And keep them tanks alive so they can lead the party to victory. Hmmm, doesn't that mean I lead the party to victory? (let the class flamewars begin). Just kidding. Awesome work on the whole series!
A great tank/heals team is the backbone of most (if not all) RPGs. Without healers, tanks are dead meat in a can... without tanks, healers are squishy hamburger wrapped in cheesecloth.
