Subject: Poser 10 suddenly not working any more

Varnayrah ( ) posted Tue, 08 September 2015 at 1:04 AM · edited Tue, 21 May 2024 at 11:35 AM

Hi,

I have a problem, maybe someone can help me? Since yesterday, all of a sudden, Poser 10 is crashing everytime when I try to start it. I'm running Windows 10 since abaout 10 days, no problems until yesterday. I allready re-installed Poser 10, overwriting the old preferences, but that did not help. What else can I do?

Try allowing Poser to connect to the internet to do verification of serial number. You may need to adjust your Windows 10 security settings for this. Poser will connet to the internet from time to time to check and verify the software serial number. Some people find it annoying.

What happens if I don't go on the internet for a couple months at a time, which is something I do from time to time? Will I have problems then?

Poser 10 only connects to the network for updates and to check to see if another copy with that serial number is running on your local network. Only Poser pro Game Dev periodically verifies the serial number over the 'net.

Do you get any error message? If it just disappears, there should be something recorded in the Event Log...

Google translate. Don't know how accurate it is.

Check here and run through some of the suggestions. Also make sure Poser has permissions with your firewall software, and anti virus software (might need to add it as an exception. If your lucky it's an update on either the firewall or anti virus software.

Edited to add the following

*Try making sure your video card driver is up to date. It also could be that the video card driver updated and is a bad update so you might have to rollback the driver

*Apparently some bad drivers

I'd hate to be the bearer of possible bad news, but it could be a memory stick that's gone bad due to heat or manufacturing issues.

Luckily replacing and adding memory is cheap. If you are comfortable with pc repair...

Instructions and videos

Not the best tutorial... but covers the basic. Don't do the install on carpeting. Take the pc to a room without carpeting. Also use a can of compressed air for cleaning, don't vacuum. Static electricity of any kind is deadly to pc components. Ideally use the wrist strap he mentions (about $5 at New Egg or Amazon.com). You normally connect it to a ground.

The error is in SMArtSkinBaseReleaseDLLWin32.dll , which I believe controls the Poser GUI. Did you (or Windows Update) happen to update your video drivers recently?

P10 don't connect to check SN. it connects to 4 sites, incl. this one, and checks adobe air. can't say for certain, but it may check SN blacklist on install.

Varnayrah ( ) posted Tue, 08 September 2015 at 1:37 PM

No, the video driver was not updated... thank you all. After downloading the poser installer new, hunting down and deleting every poser related file in AppData and temp folders and re-installing it is running again so I think it was something with the AppData or the old installer must have been broken.

Glad it's working now! :) If it happens again, file a support ticket..

Glad it wasn't memory. Side story example, on software updates that sometimes cause problems, my Google Chrome browser had stopped working for a week. Error reports weren't helpful at all. Turns out my firewall manufacturer had introduced a bug accidentally which they just patched (took them a week and a half). Even though connectivity had the browser going through the firewall, and exemptions were made to the rule set, the actual update introduced interfering issues which got patched out.

So sometimes patches can cause issues. Even specific Windows patches, and it's always good to know how to roll back a driver (graphic card) if needed or how to uninstall a windows patch (if it causes errors)...
