Description
- Scotland -
Later on my way I passed this lonesome and unexpected manor close to the wood and hidden by trees.
When I stopped I couldn't beleave that it was deserted and forgotten. With all the silence around it almost looked eerie. The dark and broken windows were staring into the rain.
* * * Surprise !* * *
Yesterday I got a surprising mail from John (WeeLaddie) and he told me that he was amazed to see the "deserted manor" featured in a television documentary called "Scotland's Secret War", and this first instalment was called "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare". The house is called "Inverailort House" and it began as a farmhouse which was enlarged and converted to a shooting lodge in 1875; and further additions were added in 1891. It was owned by the Cameron-Head family, but in 1940 it was commandeered by the War Office and used as a special training centre for the SOE (Special Operations Executive). They were responsible for training undercover agents during the war, who would then be sent off to create havoc behind enemy lines. Two famous visitors during the war years were the actor David Niven who took a course there, and the infamous spy Kim Philby who trained agents in how to live undercover in foreign countries. The SOE was disbanded when the war ended, and the house was abandoned and left to crumble as a testament to a bygone age. Thanks a lot, John! ;o) And thanks for stopping by and all your intersting comments! ;o)

Yes, Rita, I decided not to live more this castle, a little too small for my needs... Fantastic image with magical effect!
Isolated and yet beautiful. This is a million dollar capture. Aloha
a beauty here; very good looking
All the homeless people in the world and this mansion sits empty...how sad...such a lovely place, I wonder what sad story brought it to this state of dis-repair...a beautiful image!
Vibrantly beautiful! Artist has professional quality eyes..
Beautiful capture. Love the vibrant colors to all your photos. TKs Rita :^)
Beautiful shot of this manor, Rita :)) The colours and light are fantastic :)) This landscape with this abandonned manor is full of melancholy and of peace in the same time :)) Wonderful!!
A must view :)
What a beautiful old house and so sorry no one lives there! I would not mind, but I would hate to have to clean a house like that weekly. Truly a lovely shot. It does show the loneliness of the hold home. Well done.
Incredible to see such an inhabited building! It fits so well in this landscape, although the price might be a little bit beyond the financial capabilities of some members here.... :) Excellent work, Rita!
Another outstanding find Rita and amazing the look of this manor !
This is really beautiful!! Excellent work and composition!!! I WOULD LOVE to walk inside there!!!
looks so very lonely but could once again be filled with love :]

I am speachless, wonderful shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How wonderful to find out new information about this magnificent building - one can only dream to live there - I still love this place, home of my ancestors. Bravo!
Wow, thanks for the additional info, that makes the place all the more interesting. Quite an unexpected catch, eh? ---- original message ---- Most certainly haunted! ;) I can't believe such a wonderful old manor lies deserted, it seems such a shame. It is a beautiful structure in a very picturesque setting. The fog on the hills and to the spooky, deserted feel. Well done!! Did you go exploring inside? I dare ya!
Thx for info, Rita ! Und die Idee von Gerhard ist auch Klasse ;-) !!!
(a real shame that a beautiful home like this is in dis-repair,BUT what a photogenic opportunity for you and we get to see it!!! )this what I posted the other day and now with the added news, it definetly puts some light on the colorful history of the house.thanks for telling Rita
Impressive architecture and splendid photo Rita!!! I like the place and the palette of beautiful colors!!! Excellent information!!!!
Thanks for the update, WeeLaddie (John) I missed this program on Monday, somehow. I did see it in the TV magazine, and had marked it. Someone probably 'phoned me. Maybe they will repeat it. It is a good thing, Rita, that you were not caught filming there 65 years ago ;0 !! Thank God, our nations have learnt lessons since then.( Well maybe Prime Minister Blair has not yet - but there will be an election in the UK, probably in May 2005 ) Warm regards, John.
Make for a superb recording studio....loudness = 2000 ;)
Thanks for the information!!!
If I were a rich man, Daidle deedle daidle Daidle daidle deedle daidle dum...I would restore this place into a haven for the soul and create a bed and breakfast getaway from it all. The atmosphere in which you photographed it fits well with the somber mood of the title! []/;^)
