"Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule."
Friedrich Nietzsche
I used an old grainy photo as a reference for this drawing. In the original photo Nietzsche's chin was resting on his hand. If you want to see the original photo just search for it on Google.

A most impressive work again, Matt. I especially love the way you did his hair. Wish I knew how to draw... sigh Guess not everyone is a multitalent... :D Big Bravo!
i found it noteworthy that in your interpretation his eyes are moving towards an expression similar to that of Hitler's - strange?
I must clear this up in light of gwfa's comment....Nietzsche was unfairly connected to the Nazi's. His last publication "Will To Power" was changed and edited by his sister after his death - thus giving Nietzsche a bad rap. The Nazi's apparently read his works, but if one studies Nietzsche closely it is impossible to fathom that Nietzsche would have tolerated the holocaust. If anyone wants to debate me on this I will gladly do so.
In heaven all the interesting people are missing. F. Nietzsche. Beautiful....
His moustache is very reminiscent of those old 1920's photos, because of the softness. The darkshades you used to emphasize the nose could be a little less strong, meaning that maybe you could use just a bit more shadow to make the nose appear more round and thus 3D. His hair is more abstracted than it is realistic. It's not a bad thing, but it looks non-1920ish.
'If you look to long into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you' ... was very helpfull to me. I don't need his work anylonger, since i am out of the box, as a friend of mine said. Your drawing is very well done, strokes and technique are great, a beautiful Portrait ...

Very strong expresion, quite a piece of work.
An awesome work, Matt! His quotation is so true, isn't it!
I must mention that when I scannned this I had to scan it twice because it was too big. I then put it together in photoshop. I noticed that on some monitors a slight line is noticable.
Superb work surely the most profound of Philosophers anyone who could live through such intense pain and yet hold such a wonderful view of life!! Wonderful art and tribute Matt!!
wow..excellent work Matt
awesome job,excellent excellent!!!!!!!!wow!
Outstanding!! ~V~
Wonderful work, Matt. I can really appreciate what went into this, being a (former) pencil and silverpoint artist. You did a great job and I love B&W still. Actually, from the thumbnail, I did think it was a photograph! Excellent drafting skills, my friend!!! Congratulations!!
WoW impressive work Matt, awesome !! v
I just noticed that my scanner vertically stretched my drawing by a considerable amount. I have remedied this in photoshop by "squishing" the image. With regards to accuracy, I noticed a few inconsistencies that I did not notice before. It's funny how the brain needs some rest before it can properly take inventory of the whole picture.
interesting and impressive work here! very well done!
Ahaa,Nietzsche..Hmmm - this man have had a lot of strange ideas...I like this postwork! And about insanity I'd say - it 's damn hard to keep your brains "home", these days...Have a great weekend, man! :)
excellent drawing and what a cookie duster he has under his nose. you are a talented artist. I really would like to start freehand drawing again, but hung up on fractals and photography
