Ok...here is my attempt to improve my technique with the very helpful suggestions I was given. More advice would be appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Nice lighting and pov - interesting surface
I'd like to suggest that you try working on terrain. You have surface pretty good, and atmosphere (though putting in some colors will add interest and beauty). Many of the folks who do the really great images use actual terrains. You can do that, or you can learn to make them in World Machine or a program like that. But I always like the misty look you are achieving.

the terrain is quite blocky ( has sharp edges ) could you increase the mesh/polygon count? otherwise it is a wonderful image
