Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, 1775-1793
------
Pencil 2b from these stage 1 and stage 2 till the completed piece. For November Theme Chiaroscuro in 2d Forum: real size 20 per 25 cm.Time for doing it: aprox 1 hour and half
-------------------
For the current theme of 2D Forum, one of the most technical I got the pleasure to challenge myself at, I have chosen a series of peculiar subjects: based on hystory and myths especially. I start with this allegoria of France oppressed by Queen Maria Antoinette (she as example of a power from nobility which was too disregardin decency and fairness to be tolerated, and which was showing a blindness towards countrymen's feelings as dull as the famous quote the Queen had the bravery to say when she was told "population has no bread", that I posted above).
The reason was merely that I wanted to create a scene including a large dress, voluminous and ancient, to show the effects of Chiaroscuro technique.
The idea was taken from... a carillon in my room :) one with a little doll dancin over it dressed "almost" as my Marie Antoinette. And also from my love for a very old Anime (of my childhood) by Rioko Ikeda, Lady Oscar, which was telling about the history of France under their last King and Queen. In manga style, so totally different (although very refined... Ikeda is an awesome artist).
I gotta repeat I adore this month's theme, which I am gonna face from the most natural field, the one it was named for, named penciling and drawing, with many mediums from Chalk to oils to litography to watercolours and prints (as for preparation for paints, or as artform in itself). The technique that Leonardo was tipping as "basilar" to painting ability and that was a constant of artistic excellence till C

Another great piece:)The folds in the dress are just superb, nice work:):):)
This is so beautiful and skilled. Cool dress indeed :-)
Already so many comments full of what you may perceive as flattery, please don't Meli as this is truely magnificent! Your speed in creating such form astounds me and it seems the technique suits your style so well. This is certainly one of the best sketches I've seen you create! Thank you so much for sharing angel :) hugest hugs
FANTASTIC WOWWWWW Melania this image is fabolous I love evrything and your style wowwww what can i tell more of I love IT ( and you ) ciao bella ti voglio bene e ringrazio ogni giorno per averti conosciuta baci Orietta
I very much like the handling of the pencil this time. That dress is oooh la la! Magnifique! For pencil, that is mighty eficient, something like this would take 6 or 7x that. I'm slothlike with pencil. Your figures are extremely well proportioned too. Truly skilled freehand. ;)
Meli, this is just beautiful! I love all the details and shading. Fantastic work!
Beautiful, unique style of your drawing.. masterpiece again!!
A very good first attempt, and you didn't pick an easy subject, having so many folds in the clothing! If I were to suggest anything it might be to make certain dark areas even darker by shading them more densely... but that's a subjective thing, it's down to personal taste. Look forward to seeing what else you'll make for the theme hugs and catch you and Cassie over the weekend :-)
Fantastic work. Very well created!!
Perfect expression on her face! It says it all. Beautiful artwork! I'm not sure what brioches are. I always heard, that she said, "Let them eat cake!"
Wao Meli! This is so very well done! Great drawing! Marie-Antoinette is just perfect! Great work! love and hugs. Pascale.
superb skillfull drawing meli & xcellent use of the technique!! :]
Wonderful!!! Splendid!
A very wonderful departure....this is fascinating.
A sweet action image. I like this one alot. Her dress is an amazing bit of texture. A very high contrasting piece, which is fun, there is always alot of dynamic tension with such a high contrast piece, which added to the context fo the piece makes it all the better. Have a good one.
Outstanding detail and unique style in this piece. Excellent artwork and commentary!! Bravo! :)
This drawing sparkles as though made of silver. Beautiful work!

wow, she's impossible with that dress! but it perfectly nestles in the doorway and there's a big spotlight lighting her up! Exemplary Chiaroscuro. Someone could duplicate this in Poser I'm sure but it would be a challenge to top this one. Bravo - here's to 2B pencils!
Don't tell us you have much to learn, Dear! All I see is: you could teach it ;o) Love the rich details on that dress and her hair! Thanks for sharing this magnificent artwork and the words!
