The expression of the eye is very touching... makes me think about an opening in a mask... and the direction of the stare upwards and towards the source of light, in combination with the change in color, produces a very ethereal impression.

It does seem to be a tortured soul with a very limited access to ease. You have been sensitive not to depict Gothic dungeon props with the lost one.
