Description
Rungholt was a settlement and a legal district (*Dingspil*—from the Old Frisian *thing* and **spel*, meaning "speech" or "discourse"*) located in the North Frisian coastal region of Strand within the Duchy of Schleswig, which was a Danish fiefdom from the 13th century onwards. From the 13th century, Rungholt also served as a parish (*kerspel* in Old Frisian). The settlement was destroyed during the storm surge of 1362. Over the centuries, remnants of the settlement—now situated within the Wadden Sea—have repeatedly been exposed by the tides. In May 2023, several interconnected settlement areas were discovered, including the foundation remains of the large church that had long been sought.
