Impressive capture! How did you manage this one? Back in the day, many many decades ago, I used to capture insect subjects in jars, place them in the fridge for a short while to slow their metabolism, then pose them on an appropriate flower, and shoot them using improvised extension tubes on my Nikkormat, eventually releasing them unharmed.

It is a combination of patience, equipment, persistence and luck.

1. Persistence: The more often you go out, to the same area that has nature frequenting, the more likely you'll see something nice
2. Equipment: I have a zoom lens which with wildlife, including insects, is advantageous because you can get nice shots without getting too close so that means giving them more personal space and less likely to spook them.
3. Patience: I don't just run up to them. If I see them, I slow to a stop, take a few pictures from that distance. If they seem comfortable with my presence, I get a bit closer, take a few more pictures, and keep slowing approaching them that way. If they start getting a bit spooked I stop and don't go closer until they seem comfortable - if they don't seem to like me there I don't get any closer. Sometimes they still get spooked and move away a bit but if not too far, sometimes they calm down again and will be okay with you getting closer again. And once you get used to getting into this pattern it gets easier with future photo subjects.
4. Luck: It is still a bit of luck whenever you get to see something good and whenever can get close enough without spooking them. There is always chances you don't see something interesting or if you do that you aren't fast enough to get a shot because they take off before you can react. There are tons of interesting things that I didn't have my camera on me or wasn't reacting fast enough to photograph them. But I still got to see them at least :)
