Description
From way, waaaayy back around September 2016. Originally (and only?) posted at CGBytes, these were paint pots and brushes that I was making for my bad Barbie maker who was, I believe, another entry for the CGBytes Barbie gone bad (or something like that) contest over there. Here's some of the blurb copied from my CGBytes pages:
I had a very specific style of paint pot in mind and couldn't find anything appropriate in my runtime or on at ShareCG.
So I did a bit of DIY.
I've been googling images for "airfix enamel" to remind myself what the tins looked like, as it's been around 15 years since I last used, or even saw, them. I'd totally forgotten the really old glass Airfix bottles - they bring back memories!
Anyway, I've got a reasonably good generic modeller's metal paint pot now. It's very high poly for me, about 1500 vertices - mainly due to using 32 segments (45 vertices per segment), bevels plus control edges on the rim and lid, and having seperate geometry for the underside of the lid and interior of the tinto enable different colours from the other sides.
Not finished yet, but to avoid losing interest (which happens a lot for me) I UV-mapped it, created a label and some Poser materials (brand new pots!), and did this render in PP2014 (without 'Smooth Polys'). I'm quite pleased.
I'm specifically making the pots so they'll render well with the 'Smooth Polys' Poser render setting so that I can use displacement for the crusty old paint- at least that's part of the idea.
I plan to release it as a freebie when it's done, so I'll try* to get it finished ! But I also want to do a few different manufacturers labels, some paintbrushes, a jamjar of white spirits, etc...
*One problem is that I tend to get interested in and bogged down in detail and background research - e.g. I've found myself searching desperately for photos of old Humbrol/Airfix pots that show what's actually written on the label round the back !
The main image was originally entitled "Paints for a master puppeteer? WIP pt2" - A step forward without the customary two steps backwards ! THe original notes are as follows:
Rendered in PP2014 Firefly, this time with IDL and 'Smooth Polys' after a minor fix to the lid (extra contol loops to stop the outer and inner parts intersecting when smooth polys is used), creation of closed pot, pot only, and lid only geometries, and a simple paint level morph for the paint inside the pot. I think may be the coloured edge of the lid needs to be curled back on itself a bit more (bright green lid at the bottom centre)
The radial lines in the gutter around the rim are caused by using reflection on the rim material (nothing to do with shadows or AO which were my first two thoughts). The shadow artefacts around the 'well' in the lid are the IDL settings I think?
The embossed number on the flesh coloured lid is simply a displacement map - I also want to be able to use the same map to get the number indented (and reversed of course!) on the underside of the lid.
The brush is a very (very!) basic attempt to get the shape I remember, and that I see in googled pictures. A couple of morphs for the tip would probably be useful.
