Description
This is a photo from about 40 years ago along track that was no longer in use. There were many short line railroad companies back in the day connecting nearby towns with the big cities. In this case the track went from Houston, Texas into the outlying rural towns south/southwest in Brazoria County ending in the City of West Columbia. The Houston Tap and Brazoria Railway was established in 1856. It was purchased by the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1873. In 1980 The Union Pacific Railroad bought the right of way. The tracks today run from downtown Houston south along Farm to Market Road 521 (Almeda Road) and end in Arcola,Texas after crossing The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Tracks. The old right of way continued along FM521 and turned west/southwest to follow State Highway 35 to West Columbia.
