Bourieva is frustrated by her visual snow problem, Nova does her best to describe peculiarities of the novel vehicle, like control rods, metal pipes and exhaust smoke. ... and the worried man who il looking at the chauffeur.

One feels a bit sorry for Bouverie and tries to understand her particular vision problem.
But what's the deal with the worried man? I'm curious :-)
The man is worried because of the car's noise; this is the only car in the town, it is owned by a very powerful baron. Bourieva has what is known as a visual snow syndrome. 2% of the population have that problem. It is the visual equivalent to the hearing problem known as tinnitus (ear buzzing). Both are neurological problems.
