Description
Following the Battle of Actium, Octavian invaded Egypt. As he approached Alexandria, Antony's armies deserted to Octavian. Both Cleopatra and Antony committed suicide: Antony fell on his sword, and Cleopatra poisoned herself, according to various sources[1] — after Octavian rejected her proposals — with the help of one or more snakes on August 12 in 30 BC. Cleopatra's son by Julius Caesar, Ptolemy XV (Caesarion), was executed on Octavian's orders. Cleopatra and Antony's three children were spared and taken to Rome, where they were raised by Antony's wife, Octavia.
