I watched Zindes cautiously, unsure what to think. The Seelie and Unseelie had been enemies for thousands of years. All I knew of the Unseelie was that they were violent people who thrived on the suffering of the Seelie. But he was the first Unseelie I had ever met. Most of what I’d heard came from those who had run-ins with Unseelie soldiers rather than civilians. Zindes had implied he was an apothecary, like I was. He was here in the Wildlands like I was to harvest herbs that didn't grow elsewhere. But the speed and brutality with which he’d dispatched the baobhan sith made me wonder. He saw me watching him. He dismissed his sword and raised his hands. “I have no intention of hurting you.” That was only slightly reassuring. He couldn’t lie any more than I could, but he hadn’t said he wouldn’t hurt me. Still, he hadn’t attacked me yet—when he easily could have. He must have understood my hesitation. He stepped back into the bush and picked up the knife he’d dropped when he’d summoned the sword. “Let me rephrase that. If you don’t give me reason to hurt you, I won’t. Don’t attack me, and I won’t attack you. Come. Finish harvesting what you need so we can move on before more baobhan sith show up.” He had a point. If there was one, there would be more in the area.
