Krampus is a horned, half-goat, half-demon figure from Central European folklore who punishes misbehaving children during the Christmas season, acting as the dark companion to St. Nicholas. He typically appears on December 5th (Krampusnacht) with chains and birch twigs to swat or carry away naughty kids, contrasting St. Nicholas's gift-giving.
