Just as humans can empathize with individuals of other species, animals are also capable of compassion and empathy when they have formed an inner bond with someone.
For example, we often hear of dogs that stop eating after their owner has died, or that refuse to leave their owner's body and won't let anyone else near them.
Even animals we classify as predators certainly have feelings for other individuals, not just their own kind...it all ultimately comes down to imprinting and the personal experiences an animal has had.
