Description
As soon as the Iceberg warning rang out, Officer William Murdoch calls out: "Hard a' starboard. Full speed astern." In response, Titanic's engines are set to reverse and they start to turn to the left. This avoids direct collision with the iceberg but the iceberg is hard and punctures Titanic's starboard side, cutting into 6 of the watertight compartments.
The stand shown in this case held the Emergency steering wheel at the stern of the ship.
