Description
A ticket to take third class was $40 ($900 today). Most of the third class on the Titanic were European immigrants looking for a better life in America. Some were already settled there and were just travelling back; others were coming for the first time, joining other family members already there. Not all were unable to afford second class, but they were saving their money for spending in America.
Conditions were plain and tight, but with real mattresses instead of straw, open air deck space and bathrooms with indoor plumbing, it was superior to other liners third class conditions. While they only had two bathtubs for their 700 third class passengers, it was enough given at the time people bathed once a week.
