Nowhere can you better gauge a person's mood than from their face, at least in children.
It must be said, though, that children are generally easier to interpret than adults. Many adults have learned to wear masks (figuratively speaking!) over the course of their lives, so you often can't "see inside" a person. Unless, of course, you understand how to read so-called microexpressions in faces, which are involuntary reactions in a person's facial expressions that cannot be controlled...but probably very few people can read them.
In children, moods usually reveal themselves in their purest form.
