You could go into a field or into your flower garden and use a shovel to dig a big hole, carefully noting each shovelful. You could then proceed to carefully re-fill the hole in the opposite order - but it would never look the same as it did before you started. A MojoWorld parable. I saved my Volumetrics atmosphere as a library item and re-installed it in a new file. That seemed to fix most of the weird behavior that the original file was showing. My guess is that the Parameter Bomb that I had originally installed and then removed was still somehow affecting things, even after being deleted. I've been building the top of the island. The wiring is in, now it's just a matter of tweaking until it looks good. A very slow moving project but it's starting to pay off.
