Both the body and hair have always been the subject of artistic imagination. In the early days of humanity, these modifications were usually signs of either tribal affiliation, an expression of religiosity, or, as in the case of Native Americans, a description of the current state of the tribal group. Paintings were intended to inform, intimidate, and demarcate. Today, such attributes are essentially just signs of personal individuality; they are intended to signal to the observer that this is an independent individualist who intends to distinguish themselves from others, who wants to stand out from the gray mass.
