Description
Planetary governor Loren Kashma tried to stop it. "Independence negotiations are going slowly, but they are moving," she argued in front of the legislature. "A sudden declaration could mean war, and none of us will survive if the colony's critical infrastructure is destroyed."
Tragically, there were too many hard-liners in the legislature, and the governor's pleas fell on deaf ears. They voted overwhelmingly for independence, and ordered the militia to prepare for war. Only God knows what the end result will be.
(Before you respond to the story, take a moment to think about what I did here. I deliberately only presented one side of the issue. We don't know what grievances pushed the legislature to declare independence, we don't know if Governor Kashma is right about the vulnerability of the infrastructure, and we don't know why the parent government has been slow about granting the colony its independence. If you only listen to one side, you'll have no way to know whether or not that side is right.)

I'm glad you pointed that out. When freedom, war, lives, etc. are all on the table...it is never an easy decision. I think it many ways, you may never have a perfectly 'right' decision available. Her face captures all the potential loss well - grief for the death that may come.
