Description
Toyama Mining Corp. station no. 16, located in the Mu Herculis asteroid belt, roughly 8.3 parsecs from Earth, is too small to justify military protection, even when pirate raiders began to prey on nearby worlds. As a stopgap measure, Mori Ayako, one of the Toyama engineers, wrote new software for the mining laser on one of the station's asteroid hoppers, so that it could target other spacecraft. It wouldn't have much of a chance against an actual raider ship, but it was better than nothing. Nobody knows who first suggested calling it "Yamato" but the entire crew appreciated the joke, and the name stuck.
As events happened, the pirates never attacked station 16, and "Yamato" was eventually converted back to mining duties.

The scene alone is really cool, but then add the storyline to it, it fires the imagination. I can see the miners desperately getting ready to defend themselves.
