Il est vrai qu'avant la fin du XVIIIème siècle et E. Vigée Le Brun les femmes peintres reconnues à leur juste valeur par leurs pairs et les mécènes étaient rares, la plus connue étant Artemisia Gentileschi, une exception. Elles furent un peu plus nombreuses au XIXème et nombreuses sont celles qui ont été reconnues comme artistes à part entière au cours du XXème siècle.
